The famous British Medical Journal (BMJ) has honoured Flemish gynecologist Marleen Temmerman with a Lifetime Achievement Award.

BMJ praises Temmerman for the way she combines science and politics and for her influence on medical care throughout the world.

Temmerman works at the University of Ghent, but has also conducted field work in Africa. She lived in Kenya for five years, performing research on HIV and AIDS. During that period, she was a teacher at the University of Nairobi.

In 1994 she started the International Centre for Reproductive Health (ICRH), which is based both in Ghent and Mombasa, Kenya. It is a leading institution in the field of sexual healthcare.

Temmerman has published four books and over 250 academic articles. She is also a member of the Belgian federal parliament since 2007, representing the Flemish socialist party.

In 2009, the International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics (FIGO) declared her the best gynecologist in the world.
